    Description

    1807 HALF CENT.
Planchet has short crack extending from Liberty's head to rim. Circulated coin with corrosion, dings and wear, but a very interesting coin. Please see the extended description below, provided for this coin, by Bob , long-time EAC and eBay member:
Hello, I am writing you to help you understand what this coin is so it can be accurately described.
I am a member of the EAC, Early American Coppers club, and an expert in both large cents and half cents.
    To begin with,
First, this is a 1807 half cent of which there is only one die variety.
Secondly, this is a late die state, specifically state IV, which had rim crumbling which is what you have circled in red on the reverse of the coin. The area you described as a "cud" appears to be a cud due to surface wear which makes it flatten and widen giving the appearance of a cud. The 1807 did not have die cuds.
Thirdly, the top center of the coin that looks like a large capital "L" is actually the letter "E" and is part of the word Liberty. The oversized E is common to the 1800 through 1807 half cent dates.
Lastly, interesting thing about this coin is the planchet split. This was due to a defective planchet. The planchets were supplied by Boulton of England.
So, that's my two cents on your half cent.
    Regards,
    Bob
