Description
Bakelite is a synthetic resin chemically formulated and named after its Belgian inventor, chemist L. H. Baekeland in 1909. Pronounced "Bay Ka Lite," it replaced the common use of celluloid and hard rubber for pool balls, jewelry, buttons, radio cases, lamps, dresser sets and more. As the first phenolicthermosetting plastic ever invented, bakelite properties made for perfect cooking utensil handles with comfortable to the touch temperature and shapes unalterable by intense heat.
Colors and shapes of bakelite are very distinctive.
Our offering is a 1930/40s heavy duty potato masher with its distinctive 'bullet' handle and avacado color. Condition of handle is outstanding; rugged stainless steel portion has been used and is excellent in condition.
